Rocket Launches:
One of the unexpected perks of staying oceanfront in Cocoa Beach is experiencing a live rocket launch during your visit. There is simply nothing like watching a Falcon 9 or Atlas rocket light up the sky — and feeling the deep rumble reach the beach moments later. Day launches are incredible. Night launches are unforgettable.
Vicki, our Guest Manager, usually gives guests a heads-up about upcoming launches during their stay. However, if you would like to follow launches yourself, you can check the official Kennedy Space Center launch schedule by clicking HERE.
For the ultimate experience, we highly recommend downloading the “Space Launch Schedule” app. Watching the launch from the beach or balcony is amazing — but listening to the live mission commentary while the rocket lifts off takes it to another level.
To set up the app:
About 15 minutes before launch, open the app and tap the live video feed to listen to real-time mission commentary. It is very informative and a key to the whole experience.

Watching the launch live from the beach or balcony
WATCHING FROM SPANISH MAIN #12 & #16:
These units offer excellent launch views. However, for the most complete experience, we recommend walking down to the beach or the beach walkover shortly before launch. Depending on the trajectory, the rocket can occasionally become obscured by the roofline as it climbs higher into the atmosphere. From the beach, you will enjoy a much wider and more dramatic view of the entire ascent.
WATCHING FROM SPANISH MAIN #60:
It will be best to watch from the beach walkover and look due north.
WATCHING FROM SANDCASTLES 706 & 709:
We have personally watched launches from both Sandcastles units and have had outstanding views with virtually no obstruction from the building. In many cases, you can comfortably enjoy the entire launch right from the balcony.
WATCHING FROM THE PORT:
Of course, you can also drive up to Port Canaveral for a closer launch experience. There are many public viewing areas around the port — simply find a good vantage point and enjoy the show.
If you would like to turn launch night into a dining experience, Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill is one of the most popular options. The second-floor outdoor deck overlooking the port provides a fantastic atmosphere for launches. Most of the waterfront restaurants at the port offer good views, however.
A few tips if you decide to watch from the port:
WHERE TO LOOK:
If you are staying at one of our oceanfront condos, you will generally first notice the glow of the rocket toward the inland side of the horizon — typically to the left/northwest — rather than out on the far tip of the Kennedy Space Center peninsula. Within seconds, the rocket will climb rapidly into full view.

A few tips if you decide to watch from the port:
- Arrive very early — launch nights can become extremely crowded
- Expect traffic both before and after the launch
- Restaurants will be busy, so plan accordingly
- Launches are frequently delayed or scrubbed due to weather or technical issues

Many SpaceX launches feature reusable Falcon 9 boosters that separate from the rocket shortly after liftoff and return back to Earth. While some boosters land on autonomous drone ships far out in the Atlantic Ocean, others return directly to Cape Canaveral and land at Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
When a booster returns to land locally, the experience becomes even more incredible.
A few minutes after launch, you may actually see the booster descending back toward the Space Coast — and shortly before touchdown, you will often hear one or two powerful sonic booms ripple across the beach. The sound can be startling if you are not expecting it, but it is completely normal and one of the most memorable parts of the experience.

- Open the “Space Launch Schedule” app
- Select the specific launch mission
- Look for phrases such as:
- “Return To Launch Site”
- “RTLS”
- “Landing Zone 1”
- “LZ-1”
- If you see those terms, there is a good chance you will witness both the booster return and the sonic booms from Cocoa Beach
